Walmart is introducing significant changes to its checkout process in various stores across the United States, with a notable shift towards a «Scan & Go» system, according to a WOBM report. This approach is being tested in some locations, including several in New Jersey.

The «Scan & Go» system allows customers to use the Walmart app on their smartphones to scan items as they shop. Upon completion, users can check out directly through the app, bypassing traditional checkout lines. In some test stores, the availability of self-checkout lanes is being limited to Walmart+ members, encouraging subscription service enrollment.

In New Jersey, stores in high-traffic areas such as Edison, Freehold and Secaucus are reportedly among the early adopters of the Scan & Go feature. This transition suggests that shoppers in these areas may encounter fewer traditional self-checkout kiosks and a greater emphasis on mobile-based transactions.

Walmart states that these changes are intended to expedite the checkout process, enhance the overall shopping experience and mitigate theft. While the company aims for efficiency, the shift may not be favored by all customers, particularly those who do not use smartphones or prefer conventional checkout methods. Further expansion of this system to more New Jersey stores is anticipated if the new process proves effective.
