Webb County, Texas has launched a OnMed CareStation telehealth kiosk at the Bruni Public Health Facility, aiming to expand access to virtual healthcare in its remote communities, according to an LMT Online report. The high-tech medical booth allows residents to connect virtually with licensed clinicians, undergo real-time health assessments, and check vital signs without needing an appointment or traveling to Laredo, which is nearly an hour’s drive for many.
Bruni, a town with fewer than 800 residents, currently has no practicing physicians, making the kiosk a crucial resource for basic medical care. The CareStation is free to use for patients and the local government. United Healthcare partnered with OnMed to help fund the Bruni CareStation, citing the challenges rural areas face with limited provider access.
«Patients in rural areas, like Bruni, often face long travel times and limited provider access,» David Solyom, senior vice president for business integration at United Healthcare, told the news outlet.
County officials intend for the kiosk to serve not only Bruni but also nearby communities such as Mirando City, Oilton and Aguilares. This launch is part of a broader rollout, with OnMed and United Healthcare planning to open another unit in Hidalgo County next month. Webb County leaders hope to replicate the initiative in Laredo to further address healthcare accessibility.
