The vast majority of sports betting kiosks located in Ohio’s bars, restaurants and grocery stores are being removed by the end of June after failing to generate significant revenue. The move comes after Intralot, the state’s largest kiosk operator, announced it was ceasing its Type-C kiosk operations by June 22, according to an Odds Shark report.

The primary reason for the failure is the overwhelming dominance of mobile sports betting. In 2023, kiosks handled approximately $30 million in wagers, a figure that accounted for only 0.1% of the $17 billion wagered online in the state. Kiosks also faced limitations, including a $700 weekly wager limit and restrictions on popular betting types like prop and in-game bets.

With the removal of the kiosks, many bar and restaurant owners are now advocating for the legalization of video lottery terminals to replace the anticipated revenue stream. The potential for legalizing VLTs is being discussed as part of Senator Manning’s iGaming bill, SB 197. A small number of kiosks from operator UBetOhio are expected to remain active in the state.
