Costco is working on a scan-and-go style feature for its mobile app to help speed up the checkout process, CEO Ron Vachris confirmed during the company’s recent earnings call. The initiative aims to address member complaints about long wait times at registers, according to a Daily Mail report.
The technology would allow shoppers to scan product barcodes with phones as they shop and then present a digital list of items to an employee near the store exit for verification and payment. This approach is similar to the «Scan & Go» system competitor Sam’s Club has offered for several years.
«We’ve also engaged in some scan-and-go, done by Costco,» Vachris stated on the earnings call, noting that «digital really enhances the speed of checkout.»
The development comes as Costco reported strong financial results, with a net income of $1.90 billion for the past three months, an 8% increase year-over-year. The company also plans to open 29 U.S. warehouses in 2025.
