An educational kiosk has been installed at the Elk Creek Conservation Area in Condon, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the local environment and conservation efforts, according to an NBC Montana report.
The unveiling, attended by over 50 people, marked the culmination of a nearly 20-year project.
The 640-acre parcel was acquired in 2006 from Plum Creek Timber Company by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and Swan Valley Connections. The area is significant for its role in supporting bull trout habitats, with Elk Creek flowing diagonally through the section before joining the Swan River.
«A lot of work by a lot of very dedicated individuals that have been done throughout the ’90s into the early 2000s,» Rusty Sydnor, CSKT fisheries program habitat restoration botanist, told the news outlet.
Conservation work at the site has included planting nearly 7,000 trees, managing invasive weeds and installing culverts to minimize disturbance to bull trout. The kiosk is now open to the public at all hours, and no permit is needed to explore the conservation area.
