The city of Wilmington, Delaware will begin replacing all of its parking meters with touchscreen kiosks to make paying for parking more convenient, according to a press release. Five kiosks are being installed in the Riverfront District, which has had several parking kiosks in place for a few years. The new kiosks on the Riverfront will serve as a test run to ensure there are no issues with the new system.
Users will text a code to the number provided on the sign or sticker displayed on the kiosk and immediately receive a text reply. The user then follows the link and enters their license plate number, chooses their length of stay and enters their payment information.
The kiosks accept coins, credit cards or payment through the Park Mobile app. Motorists can also pay by text.
The next phase, set to begin the first week of January, will involve the deployment of new kiosks at a total of 44 locations in the downtown business district. These are locations that currently have parking meters. As the kiosks are activated, meters on that block will display a yellow sign reminding motorists to pay at the kiosk.
The city has contracted with Flowbird, a parking technology company, to install the kiosks and provide ongoing technical support.
