Edeka Beckesepp has integrated self-service checkouts featuring Diebold Nixdorf’s AI-powered fresh produce recognition and age verification solutions into its store in Waltershofen, Germany. The implementation aims to streamline the shopping experience for customers and optimize staff deployment, according to a press release.

The system utilizes Vynamic Smart Vision Fresh Produce Recognition, allowing customers to automatically identify and weigh produce without barcodes. Additionally, Vynamic Smart Vision Age Verification enables automatic age checks for restricted items like alcohol, reducing the need for direct staff intervention during daytime operations. This age verification process is designed to be GDPR-compliant, avoiding facial recognition or data storage. The store will also operate without staff from 6 p.m. to midnight, with ID card access for age-restricted purchases during these hours.

«When planning the new store, it was important for us to fulfill our role as a local supplier and combine customer convenience with optimum staff deployment,» Johannes Ruf, owner of Edeka Beckesepp, said in the release.

«While the self-service checkouts also allow us to operate at night, the two AI-based solutions minimize two of the most frequently cited hurdles that customers mention when using self-service solutions: The lengthy search for the right item when registering fresh goods and the personal interaction for the purchase of age-restricted goods.»

Edeka Beckesepp plans to expand this technology to additional stores.
