The Dallas City Council voted 11-4 this week to approve a contract with IKE Smart City LLC for the installation of up to 150 digital kiosks on city sidewalks, according to a KERA News report. The decision follows more than a year of debate.
The interactive kiosks are planned to offer free Wi-Fi, directions, transit schedules and public safety alerts. Proponents, including local business and arts groups, argue the kiosks will provide valuable information and increase visibility for small businesses and community artists.
However, the program has faced opposition from some council members and community organizations who raised concerns about sidewalk obstruction and visual clutter. «We’re sacrificing our walkability and safety of pedestrians in our most congested urban environments,» District 14 council member Paul Ridley told the news outlet.
The city estimates the 10-year contract will generate approximately $67 million in revenue. The council is expected to vote on specific license agreements for the kiosks later this year.
