The Borough of State College is removing four downtown parking kiosks, transitioning to a mobile-payment-only system using the ParkMobile app, according to a WJAC 6 report. The change affects parking on South Borrows Street, South Allen Street, West Foster Avenue and West Beaver Avenue. Officials cite outdated kiosk technology and the increasing popularity of mobile payments as reasons for the shift.
Thomas Brown, the borough’s director of parking, told the news outlet, «The kiosks are of older technology. We’re having a lot of difficulty with them, and we’re having trouble getting service for the kiosks.» While mobile payment becomes the sole option in these specific zones, the borough has also installed new single-space meters for those preferring coin payments and continues to offer card/coin payment at the Beaver Lot and McAllister Parking Deck.
