Trump administration seeks halt to EV charging buildout, sparking concerns

President Donald Trump’s administration is pushing to halt the buildout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the U.S., challenging federal funding allocated under the Biden administration, according to a PBS report. In a letter issued Thursday, the Trump administration directed states to stop using funds for EV chargers, citing concerns over taxpayer dollars being wasted.

Experts, however, argue the move may be more complicated than it appears. «Most of the unawarded money is sitting in state Department of Transportation bank accounts ready to be spent,» Ryan Gallentine, managing director of Advanced Energy United, told PBS. He called on states to continue their work until further guidance is issued.

The initiative could also spur legal challenges as many projects, already approved and funded, would face delays. The push to reduce federal incentives for EV infrastructure is seen as part of broader efforts to unwind Biden-era environmental policies. Despite these efforts, experts predict the growth of charging networks will continue driven by consumer demand.
