Germany shuts down overnight digital signage to save gas

Germany has officially ordered overnight shutdowns of non-essential digital signage as a way to save natural gas. The country traditionally has relied on gas from Russia, but with the current war in Ukraine, that gas is in short supply, according to a report by The Register.

The current plan is to turn off digital signage in store-windows and other non-essential locations between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. However, these regulations have already had errors. For example one ordinance substituted 6:00 with 16:00, which would mean displays could only run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Germany has also added exceptions for digital signage at bus stops and train stations, which deliver both advertisements and information.
